we are told that it is sometimes a custom in China to keep the deceased body preserved (like Lenin in Moscow) for future viewing and visits by the relatives....is this true?
Peary P. Austin, Texas USA
REPLY
I have not heard of this but I am sure it has happened for important statesmen.
Like Lenin a large number of people would want to view so some sort of preservation would have to be used for a few days.
A million people attended the funeral of Chairman Mao Zedong in Tiananmen Square. ( 1976/9/9)
However for the average city slicker, the land is too dear for burial so most everyone is cremated.

TO ONE AND ALL
I am driving an `07 Volvo VN 780.
Beneath the bench seat in the kitchen area is a 12" bass speaker.
Above the table, on each end of the overhead bed, is a n 8" woofer.
In each of the doors, beside your feet is a 7" sub-woofer.
On each end of the dash is a 6" mid-range and in each end of the overhead is a 4" tweeter.
I left Calgary at 4 AM.
Ahead of me was one of the blackest, most ominous, clouds that I have ever seen.
Somewhere above this cloud was a full moon, its light spilling sideways to glow through a thinner cloud to the West.
The diffused light lit up the world, white from the latest fall of snow.
All around me, through the folds of the hills I could see roofs of houses, outlined with coloured lights.
As I rolled down the hill beside Lac Des Arcs, just East of Banff, the moon broke through and lay a silver trail across the ice.
While my mind was enthralled by the glories of nature, taking me back to the white Christmases of my youth, my body was engulfed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as my Volvo sound system enraptured me with that classic of Christmas Carols, `Oh Holy Night'.
Merry Christmas, to You and Yours

Re trucking:
Does a semi with a loaded trailer have oversteer/understeer like a car does? What about if there are multiple trailers?
What are the restrictions on day/night driving for two-box and three-box trailers?
Why do the old Grayhound busses have have that weird tandem trio of rear wheels - one wheel followed by two wheels on each rear axle (each side)?
-------------------
Wow! Your page really looks different since last time I was here!
Mike R. Portland, Oregon USA
REPLY
Over steer and under steer are usually caused by improper load balance. Either the weight the vehicle is carrying is too far forward, putting more pressure on the steering axle or too far back, creating a lack of sufficient pressure on the steering axel. This is very common in pick-up trucks, or small cars pulling large trailers, with heavy loads. These vehicles are a menace on the highway but are seldom caught because they never have to go over weigh scales.
Large trucks are much safer as they are constantly forced to go over weigh scales where each axle combination is weighed to see that; a truck is not overweight, and that the weight is distributed properly between the axel combinations.
However, last night; the rig I was driving, for the movie Cats & Dogs 2, had a real bad under steer. The fifth wheel was all the way to the back putting most of the weight of the trailer on the drivers, rather than being equally shared by the steering tires. When I tried to turn a corner the front end didn't have sufficient weight to hold the tires on the pavement and the front end would hop around the corner.
Improper distribution not only results in poor steering but also poor braking ability, as well as causing unnecessary wear; on the pavement surface, and the tires
Multiple trailers will contribute to, over, or under, steer to some extent if the weight is not properly proportioned between the front and rear axel combination as this does effect the weight on the trailer that is towing the following trailer, if the trailer is a `semi'. A true trailer carries all its own weight and does not add weight to the back of the unit that is pulling it.
For instance; if you were pulling a child's waggon, the weight of the handle, in your hand, does not change between an empty or a loaded waggon.
If there are any restrictions for trailers, Oregon would be the place that would have them.
Personally I don't know of any night/day restrictions for multiple units. One would have to query each state, and province, separately as there are no federal guidelines in this regard.
Large busses, like tractors, and trailers, often have an extra axle. This adds to the weight carrying capacity of the vehicle. It also gives a smoother ride.
This additional axel is often a tag axel which can be lifted off the ground when the vehicle is empty to save wear and tear on the tires. Sometimes they are dual wheel but often just single wheel to cut down on weight or in the case of a bus with rear mounted motor, to allow more room for the engine.

Hi.
Sorry for disturbing you but I've seen your web page about the Trev Deeley Harley exhibition, and I've seen tha Harley Nova prototype.
It's possible to have the hi-res version of this shot?
You will be so kind to send it to me?
I'm very interested in Harley prototypes and I've never seen that bike before.
Here in Europe is very interesting.
If not possible, I understand.
Dont worry.
Many thanks for your time and help and sorry for the inconveniences.

Hi great pics.
we normally drive to Lo de Marcos just north of Bucerias
this year we are planning on flying down and I want to buy around barra de navadid
I was wondering though do you know the distance between Zihjatinaio and manzanilla?
I know from PV to manz it is about 3 hours or 280 miles
I can not find the Zih to manz distance and am thinking it might be better travel time if we decide to fly
thanks
you have a great sight with wonderful pics.

Manzanilla is a little seaside village, about, 1 hour North of PV ( Puerto Vallarta ).
La Manzanilla is a little seaside village, about, 1 hour North ofBarra de Navidad .
Manzanillo is a busy seaport, about 1 hour South of Barra.
Zihuatanejo is a tourist Mecca for Canadians and is about twice the distant from Barra as PV.
There is an airport at Manzanillo (ZLO) and you can get direct flights from YVR (Vancouver.
There are daily flights from YVR to PVR (PV) and Zihu.
PV would be much closer than Zihu.
However the road from Barra to Zihu. is less winding with fewer hills.
This website will tell you more.
I love Barra.
Buy a place on the beach and invite me down. (LOL)

We stopped into Zihuatanejo last winter while on a cruise and knew we'd be back to enjoy more.
We're hoping to go back in Feb but are not sure where to stay and am wondering if you can help.
Clean is most important, as well as friendly, with some charm/character and reasonable prices but doesn't necessarily have to be cheap.
Four star would be our aim.
We quickly visited Brisas Del Mar if you know that one.
We thought it was nice but didn't see much of town other than a quick cab ride and a stroll around the main beach after Bandidos for an extended lunch before we had to get back to the ship.
Sounds like you know town fairly well.
Hope you can help point us in the right direction.
Many thanks!

One of my favourites is Mi Casita.
It is on the top of the hill going to Playa Ropa.
Clean, Rustic, Quaint, fantastic view. See pictures at bottom of page Getting Married .
However, it is a long walk to the beach and not 4 star.
Across the street from it and up a steep driveway is, I believe a 4 star. It would have a fantastic view, but again, a long walk to the beach.
Down the hill from there, towards the beach (La Ropa) is a 4 star by a Canadian company, Intrawest,
Club Intrawest Zihuatanejo has view and beach.
All places in Zihu. are clean, all people are friendly. Btu I believe those are the only two that are 4 star.
For more accurate information check out ZIP- Zihuatanejo .
Just North of Zihu, is a small community called Ixtapa. There you will find several 3 and 4 star hotels.
Other than a water park and a night club, there is no town, or amenities.
However it is only a 10 minute ride in a taxi or 15 in a bus, both of which are quite cheap.
For more accurate information check out ZIP- Ixtapa.
Both pages will link you to a message board which can definitely answer all your questions.
When I stay in China I stay at 4 and 5 star hotels. In Canadian terms they would be 1 or 1/2 star.
This is what I look for in Mexico. The cheaper the better, and the closer to the beach the better. I only want the hotel for one thing, sleeping.
The rest of the time I am at the beach or exploring.
So, unfortunately I can't tell you about 4 star availability, but the two websites I just listed have a hotel directory.
Enjoy your trip.
Feb. is a great time to go.
Hell, any time is a great time to go to Zihu.

Glad to hear from you and glad you are still emailing the rest of us.
We are the ones who went to Huatulco and fell in love with the beautiful place. Loved the town of Santa Cruz, the people, and the food.
The food in the town square was awesome!
We are taking a cruise the end of August to first week of September. It is in your part of the world.
We leave from Seattle and go up the coast to Juneau, back down the coast line. ....Stop in BC for a day.
Please tell me about the weather, how to pack, etc.
We are Texas people, so we are used to hot.......but not used to cold. Someone recommended lots of layers.
Can you tell me the average temp that time of year? Rain? Etc?
Thanks,
Tawanna B. Katy, Texas US of A.

Is it not to love?
Didn't get to eat in the town square, I always like to do that in any town, when I can.
What town in B. C.? Victoria or Vancouver?
I have never taken that cruise but I am told it is lovely.
When I went to Alaska it was by truck, up the AlCan.
The cruise will take you to see glaciers in Alaska, so you will need warm clothing to go on deck.
Texas gets chilly at night.
Use that as your guide for clothing.
You won't see hot up here. We get to 75 and everyone cries `heat wave'.
Rain gear, umbrellas, just in case. Fist week of Sept. is usually rainy.
Of course nothing is normal anymore so it is totally unpredictable.
Check this out. It will give you the weather for last year Sept. 1. http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/CYYJ/2007/9/1/DailyHistory.html?req_city=Victoria&req_state=BC&req_statename=British+Columbia
Victoria is a good indicator. It is close to, North of, Seattle so it is similar. It is close to, West of, Vancouver, so what they get, we get, a few hours later.
From there you travel North and it gets progressively cooler and wetter. The North end of Vancouver Island, which you will follow, and the Queen Charlottes, which you will pass, are all rain forest.
And being on water is always cooler than being on land.
Hope this helps, glad you enjoyed Huatulco and hope you enjoy Alaska.

It's weird, the strangest requests will bring up a page on my website, within the top 5, with most any search engine, yet some of the more common requests will not bring me up at all.
Silly me, I had corrected the error in the contact clicks but forgot to upload the corrected page to the server.
My trip that year, `06, had two purposes.
1: To introduce Mexico to my wife.
2: To find a small community where land was cheap.
1: Though Serena enjoyed Mexico I will never convince her to live there.
2: Websites such as mine have done so much to promote Mexico that it no longer has cheap land.
I wish to start a recycle business.
Most small towns don't have enough supplies or customers for two businesses of the same type.
I have added your E, with your contacts, to my guest book.
If you wish any of it changed, please let me know.

Hello Bear!
Taking the family to Playa Del Carmen for a week. Two adults and 15, 19 & 20 year olds.
Which is better? Helena and I have been to Xel-ha but the write up for Xcaret looks pretty good, too. Plus I believe that Xcaret is only 10 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen while I know that it takes an hour to get to Xel-ha??
Help!
What can you tell us?
Thanks.

I have never been to Xel-ha. Was going to go this year but it looked all water stuff and Serena doesn't do water.
Xcaret by all means. Gotta do it. Take the day trip but book it through one of the guys on the street.
Thought I would save money and we took the bus down the road. It drops you off at a big hut then you walk under the road and catch another bus through a tunnel.
However when I got to the ticket booth they had no tables for the supper. You have to book ahead. So we didn't go in.
The supper and show are no longer separate.
You are going to be there for a week. If the family likes water stuff, ie swimming and snorkelling, do both.
One of the guys I work with is a diver and his wife speaks Mandarin so we are planning a trip next spring.
Xel-ha, Xcaret, and cenotes.
The two of us will go diving and leave the women to shop in Playa.
Serena enjoyed Playa. I preferred Tulum but she was afraid of the dark, quite, & lack of people, so we only stayed one night.
Was more expensive too. We paid P500 for one night, but in Playa, right downtown we paid P250 per night.

Hello Bear,
My knowledge of such things is that the terms used are a matter of convention rather than the result of dictionary like precision.
It is true that some provincial buildings are referred to as 'legislatures' but some are also referred to the National Assembly (Quebec), the House of Assembly (Nova Scotia), and the Legislative Assembly (New Brunswick). While people call the Ontario house the legislature their representatives are called MPPs, or members of the provincial parliament.
Growing up in BC I always recall the provincial house referred to as the Legislature and here in town people just call it the 'leg'. But there are some references to as the parliament or the parliament buildings. So either parliament or legislature seems to be OK.

I often get replies from our lord and master Premier `What's His Pickle', and the return address, letter head, and envelopes, says `Parliament'.
So I deride him that he is so unintelligent as to think he is in Ottawa.
This past weekend I was in Beacon Hill Park and, for the first time, I walked up to the top of the hill and looked at the sun dial with the arrows pointing to different mountains. One line pointed towards the Parliament bldgs.
Realizing that this stand is many years old I began to rethink the validity of my accusations to the Premier.
I may have been wrong in my quote but I still maintain he should be impeached.

Thank you.
I just love the site especially having been to many of the exact same places.
I had traveled to Baja starting way back in 1970 before any electricity and phones and almost no English spoken there back then.
Then I have been many times since but like anything else things have changed.
During the late 70's and 80's I was on the Olympic shooting team so I had been several times to Mexico City but I never really got to go site seeing.
Then last year I raced in the La Carrera Panamericana which took me many places.
Until then I had absolutely no idea how beautiful Mexico was including every little village up to the amazing beautiful colonial cities like Zacatecas, San Miguel de Allende and others.
What is so amazing about your site is it seems to skip the citys and focuses on the highways and that is very appealing to us that have race at speeds of 200 miles per hour on them.
Thanks to your site now many of us will be able to revisit since we could not focus on the surroundings when racing.
I assume it's OK to post your site on my blog.
By the way, just in case you don't know, the tree in your photo is called a Jacaranda.
I first fell in love with then while on a hunting safari in Africa.
Traditionally the natives have known for hundreds of years, where ever there is a Jacaranda growing there is water.

Thank you for your support.
I checked it out. æ
It would cost me $7.95 per month, I have over 100 Mb.
Actually my website is over 1,300 pages with over 100,00 pictures, just under 3/4 of a Gb.
What is the URL to your website. æ
I will add it to your E and put it in my guest book?

Dear Editor, Webmaster:
How would you like to have Bearspage in http://www.securitycornermexico.com
Promoting the Culture of Safe Travel in Mexico since 2002.
We share at no cost a versatile NEWS!! Service with the Global Perspective in mind.
Also, about 40 online articles, mostly edited in English by expats.
Security Corner is recommended by the Washington Post, Travel Section and more than 20 of the most respected international forums that specialize in Tourism and Travel.
I've noticed that your Site is like mine and recommended by http://www.123greetings.com/links/events/cinco_de_mayo/
I'd appreciate a reply.

Don't let your website die!!!
I've been looking for a project to work on and this might just be perfect for me.
I'd love to continue your site as is and continue to add to it.
Let me know if you'd be interested.
It'd be a shame for all your work to just disappear.

Nothing is definite yet.
I have a friend who has a server and he has offered me space.
Time will tell as I have nothing new to add at this time anyway.

Hopefully your site will stay online;
we enjoy it, and we haven't even gotten round to some of the various photo galleries.
Work is hectic, but we would like to peruse the novel.
In the meantime, here is something I kind of did;
I write short stories sometimes..
Cheers

BEAR'S NOTE:
Click on the highlighted `short Story'.
It is very good.

Hi Bear.
Damn shame!
But I wonder if perhaps you might let us publish some of your Mexico pics and stories.
The stipend is modest, but our readership is vast and I think they'd love your work.

Sure, help yourself.
If you need the pics at higher resolution let me know which ones.
Also if you want any stories rewritten.

Why don't you backup your server and move on?
The URL site name is registered to you right?
You can get a server package from telus or shaw with static ip and re-register your URL name to the new static ip.
You just have to setup your own server that you are in control of.
Just have to deal with your isp instead of the idiots that hosts your page.

An E sent by Bear (me) to all my readers.
THIS MAY BE MY LAST E.
For the last 2 months I have had nothing but problems with my server, Canada Web Hosting. There was a corporate take over this year and the new owners, Synergy Web Services, are complete idiots.
I have sent them many E's and also a snail mail. They have failed to reply to any of my missives.
This week I have received final notice to pay my yearly fee. I have informed them, more than once, that if they are not going to reply to my letters, after all the years that I have used, and promoted, their services, then I will move my account elsewhere.
Truth is, I don't think I will move my website. I think, after all the years, and hours I have spent on it, I will just let it die.
Times like this, when I am not working, I have averaged 12 hours a day on this keyboard.
I greatly appreciate all the letters, and comments, I have received from everyone, and I am happy that I have had the opportunity to meet you and I am glad my stories, and photos, have lightened your day.
However I am disappointed that very few of you took the time to read my novel and of those of you who have, no one has ever written me with a critique.
If you wish to read it, download it now before it is gone. http:// www.bearspage.info/h/no/in.html
And feel free to copy any pictures you wish to keep.

I have a big block Ford 460 in my 33 footer so I'm not really too worried about the hills...they can't be worst then driving hwy1 on the Baja is it?
Adam S.
REPLY
Yeah, should be all right, depending on how much beer you have in the trunk.
Sorry, never driven the Baja.
But I run 53' trailers over the Roger's Pass so I am used tight corners and steep hills.

Thanks for all the info Bear.
Tapachula should be right at the border of Mexico and Guatemala.
It looks like I will have to try and find the parallel free road once I'm on the 200.
I will have a guia roji but I think they just show the toll roads? Thanks for all the info though.
Saludos,
Adam S.
REPLY
That's what I have, Guia.
For the state of Chiapas it shows a green line over top of the red line so I assume the freeway is very close to the narrow road.
The trick is that the freeway and the regular road are both called 200, I believe.

Hola,
I was wondering if Hwy 15 and 200 were free roads or toll roads?
I plan on driving my RV from Mazatlan to Tapachula?
I would like to avoid the toll roads if possible?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Saludos,
Adam S.
REPLY
Sorry, cant find Tapachula on my map.
I have found that where ever there is a toll road there is a parallel free road.
My map is 6 years old and shows both going South from Mazatlan.
When I went South from Maz I took the bus to Gualajara so I was on freeway all the way.
If you are going South of Puerto Vallarta you will need a big motor in your RV. The road to Manzanillo is very; narrow, winding, lots of sharp corners, and very steep.
Make sure your breaks are set up.
OK. Looked it up on the internet. It is where Paul and I where heading last year, But stopped at Huatalco.
As I was saying, you might want to avoid the steep hills South of PV. by taking the freeway to Guada. and then down to Manznillo. If not, it is free from PV. to Manzanillo.
Going South from Manz., two years ago, the wife and I ended up on the toll road but when we went North we found the free road. The toll Starts North of Manz. about 10Km. So be careful once you pas El Naranjo.
Likewise, when Paul and I went South from Acapulco last year we went South out of town and then thought we had missed the turn so we came back North a ways and turned North which put us on the toll road.
Had we stayed going South I think we would have come back onto Hwy. 200, South of the toll booth. The map shows a road to the West of the airport.
The Toll road is actually going East and then you turn off on to 200 which is free. So we paid the toll and only used it for 5 KM.
Other than that the map doesn't show any freeway until you get to Arriaga in Chiapas State.
My map shows both red and green through the state of Chiapas. So you should be good on the home stretch.

Do you have a place for a reciprocal link?
But for sure your letter will be in my guest book.
Bear's Note: I cruised his website (Love the music.) - Dog's Escort Service is a pilot car service. Not what you were thinking. I put it on my Truckin' Page.
