Story and Photos by

LEE A. WOOD

Most people, in Asia, are familiar with the name `Bollywood’. And why not? India produces over seven hundred feature films every year.

Most Caucasians are familiar with the name `Hollywood’. And justly so as California is the major Movie and TV producing center for the Western Hemisphere.

Approximately three days driving, or three hours flying, time, North West of L. A. is `Hollywood North’. Vancouver, B. C. (British Columbia) is a recent contender in the film industry but has quickly outgrown its sister city, Toronto, Ont. (Ontario), as the number one film producer in Canada.

From the production of four or five films, twenty years ago, Hollywood North, in `03, is expected to produce some two hundred; movies, TV series, and pilots for TV series. Plus innumerable commercials, documentaries, and shorts.

Though most moviegoers are familiar with the terms,. Bollywood, Hollywood, and Hollywood North, many of them question the terms seen in the credits at the end of a film. Terms such as; gaffer; grip; and best boy, leave the audience mystified.

This book, `Hollywood North the Pictionary’, will try to describe, in the words of the person involved , what these terms stand for.

I have gone through a crew list and taken the names of the positions held by the employees, then photographed and talked to the people, on set, and asked them to describe, in one or two sentences, what the title means.

Originally called Gastown, the small coastal community of Vancouver has evolved into a Metropolis that covers the entire delta of the Fraser River.

Gastown is still at the heart of Vancouver and Vancouver is the heart of Hollywood North. Surrounded by the cities of Richmond, Delta, Surrey, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Burnaby, North Vancouver and the Municipality of West Vancouver, Vancouver has become the new glamour capital of North America.

For years the film companies have been using locations in Vancouver and the surrounding province of British Columbia on a temporary basis, now they are digging in to stay.

Temporary sound stages and studios in the Chinatown area of Vancouver have been vacated by the major production companies who have made permanent Hollywood type film centers in North Vancouver (pg. pic # Caption Cannell films new north shore studios) and Burnaby. (pg pic# Dominion Bridge Studios Offices include Paramount Pictures) The old facilities did not remain empty long as other companies saw their benefits.

The abundance of locations, lack of an extra's union, lower valued dollar, government incentives, the temperate climate, and abundance of natural settings and scenery, such as desert, mountain, Florida everglades, prairie fields, all within a few miles of Vancouver have attracted film companies from all over the world as well as other parts of Canada.

Always located here the C B C has grown into a major contributor to the industry with programs such as there award winning series "Beachcombers". (caption for pic of CBC building. Filmed on location in Gibson's Landing Beachcombers was produced in over 16 languages, and viewed in 60 different countries for over twenty years (pic Pg #) This influx of companies has meant the increase of job openings and training programs.

Years ago gold struck miners headed for the hills of the Cariboo, the glamour struck would-be -stars headed for the hills of Beverly. Now the star rush is on again, towards the valley of the Fraser River. From all over the world the would-be -stars are moving to Vancouver. With dreams of stardom they haunt the union halls and the casting offices. Because the industry is so new to this area most of them find work. Usually for only a couple of hours as an extra, but it is enough to wet their appetite. They continue to plaque their friends, their agents, and the unions trying to get enough parts to make a living, always with the dream of being in the right place at the right time and being discovered.

Other more practical people see the opportunities of creating a career behind the cameras, lighting, driving, catering, directing, the list of jobs is endless and so is the list of people applying for them.

A movie is a rock in a pond and the ripple of related jobs spreads out for miles. At the hub of this new series of waves is Hollywood North, Vancouver, B. C.
