PRINCE GEORGE

Story and Photos by

LEE A. WOOD

Flight from Prince George to Vancouver.

Obviously, from the name, one would assume that it was named after royalty. And one would be right. The city, or original fort, was named, Fort George, by Simon Fraser, in honour of King George III.

Prince George, like many communities in Western Canada, and the North Western United States of America, began as a fur trading post, built by the Hudson Bay Company.

Naturally one will find a replica of Fort George in the South Fort George Park, situated in the heart of the city.

IT IS FAIR TO SAY THAT PRINCE GEORGE IS THE HEART OF B. C.
IT IS ALSO FAIR TO SAY THAT LOGGING IS THE HEART OF PRINCE GEORGE.
HERE WE SEE THREE PULP MILLS. (L to R) INTERCONTINENTAL PULP, NORTHWOODS PULP AND TIMBER,
AND PRINCE GEORGE PULP AND PAPER.

The first thing I did when I arrived in Prince George, was go to the Great Wall Restaurant. Handily enough it is on the side of the highway as you enter the city.

With this destination in mind I had held off stopping for supper and my mouth was watering by the time I arrived.

The owner of the restaurant, Chung, is a friend of mine whom I hadn't seen for several years. I was disappointed to learn that he was not in. He was in Vancouver, the same place he had been the last time I had visited his restaurant.

And, as the last time, I was disappointed. They still serve Cantonese style Chow Mien. When Chung had operated the Hart Wheel Inn, a truck stop on the Hart Hwy., he had served the best, Canadian style, Chow Mien in the world.

This is not to say you shouldn't go to the Great Wall Restaurant, if you want; good food, good service, a pleasant atmosphere, an excellent smorgasbord, all at a reasonable price. Just don't expect good Chow Mien.

Author's note:For a true chow mien, add bean sprouts to the above recipe.

When one lives in a town for several years, leaves for awhile and then returns as a tourist, it is difficult to view the town through the eyes of a tourist.

So it was with me when I returned to Price George. Everywhere I looked I saw people I knew, houses, or apartments I had lived in, and places I had been employed.

When I took pictures I didn't know whether to use them for my biography or for my travel story.

I had to stop and ask myself, 'If I was from another country, would I find this of interest'.

I tired to use the same criteria I use when I am in a foreign country, 'What would be of interest to the folks back home'.

Whether in Cuba or China I try to photograph what is unusual to me, so while in Prince I tried to photograph what would be unusual to those who live in places other than B. C. (British Columbia, Canada).

PRINCE GEORGE, GOING DOWN HILL INTO TOWN

Prince George lies in a bowl, the sides of which are hills of sand. The main shopping and residential areas are in the bowl but the hills are becoming more and more populated. In the last few years thee has been a large university built atop one hill and just recently, `03, major retailers have opened, large outlets on another.

I CAN'T COUNT THE NUMBER OF TIMES I HAVE SCRUBBED THIS FLOOR, AT 3 IN THE MORNING,
AFTER A DANCE OR OTHER SOCIAL FUNCTION.
ORIGINALLY A CURLING RINK, THE FLOOR, MADE FROM BIRCH, WAS REMOVABLE SO THEY COULD LAY ICE, IN THE WINTER.
(Interior kids on skate boards.)
WHEN I LIVED IN PRINCE THIS ROOM WAS ALSO USED FOR SKATING AND SOCIAL FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS A THE LONGEST BANANA SPLIT IN THE WORLD WHICH WOULD BE SERVED DURING AN ALL NIGHT SKATE SESSION.

PIECES OF EVES TROUGH WOULD BE JOINED, TO A LENGTH OF TWENTY OR THIRTY FEET, THEN LINED WITH ALUMINUM FOIL. THE TROUGH WAS THEN: LINED WITH BANANAS; FILLED WITH ICE CREAM; AND COVERED WITH SYRUP, NUTS, AND CHERRIES. LARGE GARBAGE BAGS WITH HOLES CUT IN THE BOTTOM WERE PULLED OVER THE HEADS OF THE PARTICIPANTS. LOOK MA, NO HANDS.

THE END OF MY PICTURES, AND THE END OF MY STORY, BUT NOT THE END OF PRINCE GEORGE.
THOUGH IT HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS, POPULATION WISE, BECAUSE IT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE LUMBER INDUSTRY, IT CONTINUES TO THRIVE, AS DO ALL CITIES, BECAUSE THEY BECOME AN ENTITY UNTO THEMSELVES. THOUGH LOGGING MAY FAIL THE POPULATION OF THE WORLD CONTINUES TO INCREASE AND PEOPLE NEED HOMES, AND PLACES TO SHOP.
