THE UNOFFICIAL SEAWALL

CANADA PLACE to DEVONIAN HARBOUR PARK

Author's note: When I use the term `official', I am actually referring to the `original' Seawall.

Since its official opening in `71 (Sept. 26), both ends of the `original' Seawall have been extended. No one seems to know, exactly, where the original ends were.

When I say `Unofficial' I am referring to these latter day extensions.

In February of `03, when I was writing this story, I was told by the Park Board that, in years to come, all of what I call `unofficial', and what I call `unofficial, unofficial' will become official.

In fact, plans are in the works to extend (my) South Eastern unofficial further East, as far as Spanish Banks.

THE `UNOFFICIAL' SEAWALL

Coal Harbour

Canada Place to Chilco Street.

Unofficially, the Seawall extends East from the Sea Plane Terminal, or at least where it was temporarily located in February of `03, where Canada Place joins Waterfront Rd., to the division between Devonian Harbour Park and Stanley Park . Approximately in line with Chilco Street.

This section of Seawall, finished but for the Eastern end, is a ten year project by the real estate division of the C. P. R.

Starting at; Canada Place, in the East, it follows the shore of Coal Harbour, to Devonian Harbour Park, in the West.

Unlike other sections of the seawall, that have naturally flowing curves, this section has many abrupt turns and right angle corners.

The Seaplane base, shared by Harbour Air and, Baxter Aviation, will be moved further West, in years to come, as the land that they now use for the parking of vehicles will become a new convention center.

IN THE FOREGROUND A TEMPORARY WALKWAY JOINS THE NEW SEAWALL TO COAL HARBOUR RD, OR WATERFRONT RD.

THE TEMPORARY WALKWAY GOES OFF TO THE RIGHT TO JOIN THE SEAWALL, A SET OF STAIRS AND A WHEEL CHAIR RAMP GO UP TO A PARK AREA.

VIEW FROM THE NEW SEAWALL. GROUSE MOUNTAIN (ON THE RIGHT) IS A LITTLE SHORT OF SNOW FOR THIS YEAR'S SKI SEASON. BEHIND THE FLOATING GAS STATIONS IN COAL HARBOUR, ONE CAN JUST MAKE OUT PART OF THE ORIGINAL SEAWALL ON THE SHORE OF STANLEY PARK.
I BELIEVE THE GREENISH PILINGS WILL BE THE NEW HOME FOR THE SEA PLANES.

ANSWER to the question beneath the opening photo. Under the Motor Vehicle act of B. C. (And most other jurisdictions) a bicycle must be equipped with a rear reflector, a bell, stay as close to the right hand side of the road as possible, signal a turn before entering the turn, and stop for a stop sign. There also seems to be a shortage of helmets.
