Originally Stanley Park was just a piece of forest, atop a mountain that is mainly under water.
During the 1800's the area was logged off, the lumber being used to make bridge beams and railway ties for the new railway.
Before all the land could be cleared it was declared a park and today, amidst the new growth of trees, you can see the large stumps of the once giant Fir, Spruce, and Cedar trees that reached as much as ten feet across and one hundred fifty feet tall.
