On the 23rd of Dec. `02, a sunny, but chilly Saturday, Jing Fu, my brother-in-law, took Mao, Dong, two of my nephews, and I, on a bus to Bei Chai.
I was all excited as Bin, my wife, had told me Jing Fu was going to take me on a boat ride to Long Hua. I was looking forward to riding across the Huang Pu River.
At Bei Chai we changed busses and unfortunately the closest I got to the river was high atop the Nan Pu Bridge.
It had been some time since Bin had been to Long Hua and she had forgotten that while she was in Canada the Chinese Govt. had built one of the tallest and longest bridges in the world. Ferry rides across the river are now almost obsolete.
By the time we reached Long Hua, in the South West corner of Shanghai, just South of the Shanghai Stadium, it was lunch time. As soon as we entered Long Hua my nephews spotted a McDonald’s Restaurant and I was only allowed to take a few pictures before we had to go for lunch.
It is hard to say which is more popular in Shanghai, McDonald’s or KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). I believe, in downtown Shanghai, I saw more of the KFC outlets. It seemed like there was on in every block.
While we stood in a line inside the MacDonald’s, I had a nice conversation with a man from New Zealand.
Imagine, traveling 10,000 miles to eat in a place I wouldn’t eat in at home. Well not never, but I prefer A & W (It’s what we grew up with in Canada.)
In Long Hua you will find the Long Hua Revolutionary Martyr’s Cemetery and the LongHua Temple.
Across the street, to the South, is a colourful area, with a large plaza.
On the North edge of the plaza are market stalls selling souvenirs.
On the South is an overhead pedestrian walkway which will take you across the street to shops and a small mall.
After wearing our legs off wandering around all the shops outside the temple, we caught the bus back home.
On Zhongsan Nanerlu we changed to another bus that took us through a tunnel to the East side of the river, past the Man Qu Park to Pu San, where we caught a number 633 bus which took us right to Bin’s doorstep.
While we were waiting for the 633 we took some time to explore some stores. But I saw several more shopping areas I wished to explore.
Tuesday was a bit cloudy, but a bit warmer and I, by myself, caught the 633 bus to Pu San.
The Pu San Highway, was, I assume, a dirt trail, but now, is two lanes of concrete.
Buildings, which I assume, had formerly been back from the dirt street, are now, on the edge of the concrete.
Like stores everywhere they like to display their products out front. This means their merchandise is now on the pavement.
Bicycles, pedestrians, and other traffic must dodge around this stuff, as well as each other.
Tractor trailers wind their way through, carrying wide loads of flat steel. The buses fly through all this at top speed, blaring their horns. It is, at most times, breathtaking, to say the least.
In Pu San I did some shopping, walking up and down several streets.
I found a news stand with a large selection of papers.
I phoned Bin and handed the Cel phone to a perplexed vendor.
Bin described the newspaper she was looking for.
The man handed me a paper and the phone. I gave him one Yuan.
The vendor and his partner had a good laugh at having conducted business in this manner.
Bin’s apartment complex is at the end of a street with very few structures, mostly unused fields. When the 633 bus goes South, it always moves down the middle of the wide street. It goes so slow you could walk faster. Yet when it comes back from Man Qu, it roars down the streets, often on the wrong side, like a fire truck going to a fire.
