For a novel experience, take the bus to the zoo.
From the six hundred block of Huahai Xi Lu or Huahai West Rd. You can catch a West bound, number 911, bus. They are easy to find, they are double decker.
Go to the top floor, there is more head room in the upper floor, and try for a front seat. If you have long legs you might have to sit sideways and occupy two seats but there probably won't be many other passengers, so it will be all right. Some of the busses have lots of leg room, in the front seats, while some don't
The first thrill you will experience is the tree branches that are about to come through the windshield at you. If you are the nervous type, you should sit on the left, or driver's, side of the bus, furthest from the trees. Huahai Lu is lined with trees, that aren't regularly trimmed, and the scars on the ends of the branches testify that the busses do, sometimes, collide with the branches.
But not to worry, just before you hit the trees, nine times out of ten, the bus will pull out into traffic, before he breaks the upper windshield on a branch.
Now comes your second thrill of the trip. As I said, into traffic. To be far enough from the curb, to avoid the trees, the bus may now be on the wrong side of the center line. Not to worry, that big truck coming at you, on your side of the center line, will get back on his own side of the road, just as soon as he finishes passing that scooter, which in turn will get back, closer to the curb, as soon as it finishes passing, that bicycle, which in turn will get back to the curb, as soon as it finishes going around the lady sweeping the leaves off the street.
And, yes, Virginia, there is room for the bus to fit under the overhead advertising that curves up over the street. And, no, he didn't just run into the back of the taxi that stopped for the light. It just looks like he is over top of the car's trunk from up here. In reality there is at least six inches between the grill of the bus and the back bumper of the cab.
Oh, I regress. Before I invited you along, on this joy ride, I should have asked you, if you are prone to; car, bus, plane, sea, or ship, sickness. This Lu, and subsequent streets to come, is fairly uneven, with small dips and spots of construction, that are amplified by the height you will be siting at. So we will roll, and sway, along the way.
This bus stops directly in front of the entrance to the zoo.
If you continue on it will end, in the heart of a residential complex, two blocks from the entrance to Qibao, Ancient Town. And just as you are arriving there, or as you are leaving, if you have your camera ready, you might get a really good photo of a gigantic airliner crossing, directly in front of you, just above you the rooftops.
Of course I had just turned my camera off when this happened.
The disadvantage of visiting a zoo in the winter is that the animals, and plants, that prefer warmer weather are not on display.
The upper floor is a collection of large terrariums while the lower floor is home to equally large aquariums.

The advantage of visiting a zoo in the winter is that there are fewer people to block your view.
The Shanghai Zoo, or Zoological park, is presently, `06, undergoing a massive facelift. New displays are being built while older displays are being updated and enlarged.

Just outside the aquariums is another set of tanks, devoted, exclusively, to gold fish.

One disadvantage of visiting a zoo in the winter is that some of the supplementary exhibits such as elephant, or sea lion, shows are not open.
One advantage of visiting a zoo in the winter is that the supplementary exhibits such as children's rides, which would normally have an additional charge, are sometimes, though not always, free.

This waterfall was confusing. The water seemed to speed up so I tried to take a picture. Then there were too many people in front so I waited. Then, when most of the people had left, the water slowed down. After I took the picture the water flow increased again.

When I first walked around the rhino building the back yard was empty. Then a Rhino started to come out of the nearest door. I was waiting to get a picture of him but he turned his back on me and swung around to go in the second door. Then he backed up and the second rhinocerous came out of the second door. After I got the picture of them the first rhino went in the second door and the second rhino went in the first door and the yard was empty again.

There are many more cages and displays of monkeys and chimps and many more displays of other animals, however, I ran out of film.
If you find yourself in Shanghai with a day on your hands, and if you like zoos, the Shanghai Zoological Park is a must see. Take plenty of film and plan on spending a full day.
The zoo is located on the Western side of the city, 2381 Hong Qiao road, just North of the East West Elevated Road, towards the old airport, not far from the Four Seasons, and Renaissance, Hotels.
We took the taxi from the outskirts of PuDong and it only cost us Y62.
