Huatulco is not so much a small town, but, originally, a sleepy village, La Crucecita, adjacent to a couple of beaches, 17, that has grown to encompass sevearal small bays, protected from wind and wave, each harbouring their own unigue beach(es) and swimming, or snorkeling, environment.
The beaches, or playas, are, listed here, in alphabetical order, Cacaluta, Chahue, Conejos, Consuelo, El Arrocita, El Tejon, Esperanza, Maguey, La Entrega, La Mixteca, Manzanillo, Organo, Punta Arena, Rincon Sabrosa, Santa Cruz, Tangolunda, Tejoncita, Tornillo, Ventura, and Yerbabuena.
According to a map I discovered, after I got home, there are actually a couple more, that don’t have names.
When we drove into town, from Hwy. 200 we came upon a beautiful, wide, divided boulevard. Unbeknownst to us the first intersection, or second actually, if we had turned to the right, North, would have taken us to the main business district, La Crucecita.

We drove merrily on, heading towards the water, enjoying the scenery, until we hit a major intersection.
Here we turned left, heading South, and followed a boulevard, out of town, so to speak, over hill and dale, until we came to Tangolunda and a sign that said `public beach’.

We didn’t stay long at this beach as we were hungry and we soon decided that all the beach front that had cabanas was for exclusive hotels. The public beach had no facilities.

We went back to the car and reversed direction on the boulevard, past the main intersection and up into the hills, on our way to Playa Cacaluta.

Way down, at the bottom of the hill, we hit a dead end. A security officer told us the beach was a 3 Km. walk.
He also told us there were no facilities, so, like Playa Tangolunda, be sure to take; water, food, sun screen, etc.
We back-tracked to the boulevard and turned toward the water where we found a parking spot for a beach called Playa Maguey.

A young man named Diego, led us down a steep flight of stairs to `Ay Caray’, a restaurant on the beach. Diego agreed to meet us at the end of the day and guide us into town where we would find a hotel for P200 a night.

After we left the beach, Diego was waiting for us in the parking lot. He was going to take us to a cheap hotel, but first he took us up the hill on the way to La Entrega.

At the top of the hill we were able to look down on Playa Santa Cruz, the cruise ship terminal and the navy docks. As there was a gun emplacement, with an armed soldier, on the edge of the hill, near the side of the parking lot, I refrained from pointing my camera towards the military instalation, and vessels.

Of course, Diego led us to a nice hotel, which of course turned out to be more than P200. It was P350, but we stuck to our guns and eventually he led us to a hotel that was P200.
That's 200 pesos per night for; 2 people, 2 beds, hot water, a seat on the toilet, a fan overhead, and quite. Lots and lots of quiet.
Of course he wanted to go in first, without us, so he could make his arrangements with the management.
Afterwards we gave him a ride to his part of town and slipped him an extra P20 for his troubles.

Located, in a very quite part of town, on the corner of Sabali and Violeta, it looks like it is the next place but the corner lot is hotel property and you can park in a fenced area if you wish.
Also, if you wish, to invest in Mexico, you can buy the hotel. The hotel is for sale. (958) 587-0133, Arturo Santos, no, he doesn't speak English.
Hotels, Inns, Posadas, Restaurants, areas with free wireless, El Centro, colonia, are all found in La Crucecita.

That evening we went for a drive out to Tangolunda and when we were coming back to town we saw an elderly gentleman on the side of the road carrying a small jerry can.
Thinking he needed to go to the gas station we stopped and picked him up.
Yes, this was a very foolish thing to do. We were well beyond any buildings, it was pitch dark, and we hadn't passed a car on the side of the road.
However, I think, if banditos wanted us to stop, they would have used a young chiquita, not an old man.
As the man was getting settled into the back seat I could hear liquid slopping around in his can and I could smell gasoline so I knew his jerry can wasn't, completely, empty.
He didn't seem to be able to speak any English but when we said `Pemex', he said `Si'. So we took him to the Pemex station.
He didn't look all that happy when he got out of the car.
He didn't go to the station but walked in a different direction.
I suppose he wanted out somewhere else but didn't know how to ask us to stop.
Using an empty gas can to hitch a ride is a fairly common tactic in Canada, but his time, I think, it back fired.

Though we had enjoyed our afternoon at Playa Maguey we wished to explor more of Huatulco, so we headed back up the hill that Diego had taken us the night before.
We went past the viewpoint where we had enjoyed the view of Bahia Santa Cruz.

While Paul settled into the restaurant, I took a walk along the beach, then walked back, checking the menu at each restaurant.
I found that all the restaurants were charging, roughly, the same prices, except for the one furthest West.
Back, off the beach, with no roof on the beach, it was selling beer for 4 pesos less than the others.
They did have some tables and chairs under some trees, on the beach, and we settled in there.
Fooled by the shade of the trees, I didn't put any sunscreen on the top of my head, nor did I wear my hat.
The sun, shining between the leaves, gave me a rather nasty sunburn, on my bald spot.

The amount of salt in the water and the lack of current in this small secluded bay allowd me to float in one position for a long time.
