PLAYA LAS TORTUGAS

(TURTLE BEACH)

Story and Photos by

LEE A. WOOD

2002 May 12. Playa Las Tortugas is mostly residential, with some very lovely homes.

The hotel zone in Cancun is built on an atoll, South and East of the city center. The coral reefs form long narrow islands around a large lagoon.

There is only one road through the hotel zone and it keeps close to the lagoon side of the islands, at times hugging the water but often separated from the shore by businesses.

LOOKING SOUTH ACROSS THE LAGOON

On the ocean side, the four lane, divided, street is separated from the Caribbean Ocean by homes and resort hotels.

Here the street is really divided, with stores in between.

(Small shopping mall.)

At one point, where the street is close to the shore the water is actually a channel, separated from the main lagoon by a thicket of jungle. Along this stretch of beach is a lovely promenade. I walked along it thinking of going for a swim but the area seemed to be occupied by locals, enjoying picnics and ignoring the `no swimming’ signs. The channel is narrow and used by high speed water traffic.

For a fee of $6 the bus will take you from downtown Cancun to the entrance to Playa Las Tortugas.

Playa Las Tortugas is not only a public beach but a wharf where one can catch tour boats, and, I believe, a ferry to Isla Mujeres.

The main public access offers some refreshment and souvenir
businesses as well as a large wharf.

I believe,
the buildings on the horizon are Isla Mujeres.

It is a long walk to the next public access.
