2002 May. Not much to say. To me Playa Del Carmen was simply a boat dock for access to Cozumel.
Originally I had planned on taking the car ferry from Puerto Morelos but when I got back from Cuba the weather was inclement and I was in a hurry to get my back pack, and computer, into a hotel.
Consequently I took the bus from Cancun directly to Playa Del Carmen. (Mayab Bus Lines $25)
Let me rephrase that.
I had planned to go directly, however, the bus broke down near the junction to Puerto Morelos and we sat there for a short time until a competition bus loaded us and took us to Playa del Carmen.
When I returned from Cozumel I simply walked off the ferry, through the plaza, to the bus terminal, and returned to Cancun.
The Rivera bus leaves every 10 minutes and only costs $32.
It wasn't until after I returned to Canada that I have learned that Playa Del Carmen, is, itself, a destination point for tourists.
Consequently there is no information I can give you about Playa Del Carmen other than to tell you the ferry terminal is very close to the bus terminal, and they have a beautiful beach.

Playa Del Carmen is a bustling resort center with new services opening daily. The main street is being resurfaced with cobblestone style bricks and a major complex is being built near the cruise pier.
Most streets in the downtown core are one way traffic.
Most streets have red curbs, no stopping at any time. And even if the curb is not painted, if the street is narrow, there is no stopping except in the parking lane.
![]() Fifth Avenue, the closest street to the beach, runs parallel to the beach and is closed to all vehicular traffic. | ![]() Tenth Avenue, the second closest street to the beach has: a wide lane for motorized vehicles; a narrower lane for scooters and bicycles; and a sidewalk for pedestrians. |

While walking down the street in Isla Mujeres, holding hands with Serena, I overheard a woman say, to her friend, “There are sure a lot of couples her!”
In Play Del Carmen I noticed that here were a lot of families, lots of small children.
I probably notice small children now that I am a small grandpa.
In Chinese culture, Serena, my wife, being the youngest is a xiao anyuh, small grandma, to the grand children of her two elder sisters.
Therefore I am a xiao yeh yeh, small grand pa, to two two-year old boys and a one-year old girl.
As my two nephews live fairly close to us we see their little tykes often, so, naturally, while walking about the streets, while on holidays, we keep our eyes open for gifts for the grand children.
Which means we also notice toddlers amongst the crowds.
Here are a few that I thought were memorable. (Click on them to see the full picture.)

I'm surprised I didn't write about this hotel the last time I stayed here. In `04 it cost me P150 for a room with 2 beds (2 people), this time it cost me P250 for a room with one bed (2 people). Prices start at P200 for a single person.
