BARRIO DE SALADITA
LEE A. WOOD
I want to tell you about the most quiet, out of the way, pristine, tranquil, place you could take your family for a holiday. Unfortunately it has already been discovered.
I am new at this travel game so it stands to reason that If I can find it someone has found it before me.
Playa Saladita was quite because we got there on a Sunday morning during the winter while the winds were light and the seas were relatively calm. As the day progressed other people arrived but not to the point where it was full, let alone crowded. One of the joys of traveling off-season.

There were kayaks and surfboards for rent. No one was renting the kayaks and the surf remained calm enough that no one wanted to use the surfboards but obviously there are times when the waves would get large enough.
Though discovered by the surfers and the investment entrepreneurs Playa La Saladita has remained a quiet backwater because of poor road conditions. However that has changed and will change more in the near future.

Playa La Saladita is only a short drive, through pleasant country side, North, on the road to Troncones. The turnoff is actually a short distance North of the turnoff to Troncones at a little village called Lagunillas. About five hundred meters North of the village, the first left turn, will take you down a narrow winding, rough , gravel, road, through mango plantations to a little barrio called Majahua.
When you reach Majahua, you turn right through the center of town. Be sure you are on the main track as all the side streets are as well travelled as the main road.
After a pleasant drive, watch for large mud nests in the trees, you will reach the barrio of Saladita. As you enter the village, be careful not to run over any pigs or chickens, bear right onto a rough track that will take you down the banks of the arroyo.
We made the mistake, upon reaching Saladita, of turning to the left at the `T' intersection and winding our way along the narrow main street and traveling West of the town to another `T' intersection where we stopped and pondered whether to turn right or left. After choosing, `right' we went a few meters until we encountered a aged gentleman who told us we were heading for his casa. He explained that we should have turned North on the East edge of town, so we backtracked. It was a pleasant experience as the extra few miles of countryside was worth visiting.
At the river, you will have to ford a branch of the Rio Saladita, but it is a good gravel crossing. After climbing the bank on the other side the trail travels East along the sandy river bed for a few hundred meters before you turn North and again cross the water.
Once up on the bank it is only a short drive to the main road. Turn left and a good gravel road will take you through mango and coconut plantations, and cattle ranches, to the beach.

If you are not that adventurous and do not want to be fording streams there is a more direct route, we learned this on the way back. Stay on the highway at Lagunillas and go a couple of miles further North on the main highway, to Llanos de Tamalhuacan.

In the center of Llanos de Tamalhuacan, turn West onto a wide concrete street that will take you through town to a good gravel road.
| BUS STOP | ![]() Llanos De Tamalhuacan. |
If you are not driving, there is bus service to Llanos de Tamalhuacan and it is a short, four kilometer, walk to Playa Saladita.
| FISHERMEN | ![]() Just West of Llanos Three young boys return home. They had been walking back from their favorite fishing hole and we gave them a lift. |
