LEE A. WOOD
A half hours drive South of Playa Del Carmen, or an hours drive South of Cancun, will take you to a pleasant little town called Tulum.
From Playa Del Carmen it is only $20 on the bus, or a small van.
When I was there, in early `04, the main street, highway 307, was under construction.
Just North of the construction, on the edge of the shopping district is an intersection.
Turn East at the sign that says BOCA PAILA.
After a two Kilometer drive on paved road you will find an intersection.
At the intersection there is a small police station.
From here you can turn North, or South, and find a wide range of, smaller, beach resorts.
We turned North, went to the very end of the road.
Well, not the end, but as far as you can drive. A gate prevents you from driving to the light house and the ancient ruins.
Those are accessed by road from the main highway.
Turning about we drove South to the third resort.

The cabins, or bungalows, come in various sizes: two bed; one bed and hammock; one bed; one hammock, no bed.
Bring your own hammock or buy one from the office.

You can also rent a place to pitch a tent, or hang a hammock, or just sleep on the sand.

There is no water or electricity.
The cabins are basically four walls. The lower portion of the walls are poured concrete. The upper portion is wood on the outside which is lined with a layer of concrete.
There is no floor or foundation. The walls are built directly on the sand.
The sand has to be constantly shoveled away form the doors and the walls as it is being constantly shifted by the winds.

In `08 we wanted to spend a couple of nights on the sand but, after Hurricane Wilma the only thing left of our little cabin was part of one wall sticking, at an angle, out of the sand.
We enquired about a different cabin but their rates had jumped to a minimum of P500 and the manager didn't seem very friendly.
After a bit of searching around we decided to stay at the motel next door, to the North.
The price was the same P500 but it wasn't like last time, concrete instead of sand for the floor, electricity instead of candles for light.
